I spent most of the past week riding my Brompton folding bike around Bordeaux, France. Nothing I like better than just tooling around and exploring a cool place like Bordeaux, talking to myself, and singing whatever song comes to mind. In this video, I’m bringing you along for the ride. It’s a LONG ride, so if you have the time to kill, sit back and enjoy. That chat starts at 0:00. The singing starts at 38:47. Enjoy!

Good morning Cousin,
I enjoyed living vicariously through your video. So much so, I ordered the Markham book Vivian mentioned in her comments. Would love to be a fifth wheel when you and Kishna return. Perhaps we can open that soul food restaurant together with generous splashes of Bordeaux in the oxtails and southern whiskey in the peach cobbler.
Oh cousin – you’re ON! And as for that restaurant, we’d have people lined up all the way down that “2nd longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe!”
The author you are looking for is Dewey Markham Jr., an African American wine authority and native New Yorker. He wrote Wine Basics: A Quick and Easy Guide. After building a stellar career as a wine educator and author in the United States, Dewey Markham Jr. moved to France in 1993, earned a degree in wine tasting from the School of Oenology at Bordeaux University, and became an ultimate Bordeaux insider. Interestingly, he was also the son of the famous mid-century comedian Dewey “Pigmeat” Markham. He penned two highly influential books:Wine Basics: A Quick and Easy Guide: A lighthearted, highly practical beginner’s handbook published by Wiley. It cuts through intimidating wine snobbery by focusing on how to read any label, pick bottles at stores, navigate restaurant wine lists, and judge wine quality.1855: A History of the Bordeaux Classification: His masterwork, which won the prestigious James Beard Foundation Book Award. It remains the definitive, immaculately researched historical guide to how France’s legendary Bordeaux region ranked its finest wineries. Both books are widely recognized classics in wine literature and can be explored on his Amazon Author Page.Would you like to know more about:The James Beard Award-winning history of the Bordeaux wine system?Markham’s expert tips on deciphering wine labels?
Jon and I met Markham in Bordeaux, if Still in Bordeaux you should try to find find him and some good red wine to bring home.
Wow, Vivian! Shudda talked to you before I left. That’s a whole lotta info for a poor boy from Flint just tooling around Bordeaux on his bike. I will file that for my next visit though. Don’t think it’ll be long!
Seriously, thanks for that lesson!
Thank you for sharing, David! Loved the narration, and the occasional rant. I’m glad you enjoyed a royale with cheese with style in Bordeaux.
It was SO relaxing Felipé. I needed that.
